Professor Rampino, a member of New York University’s department of biology, researches the causes of mass extinctions and its impact on the evolution of life. In the last 500 million years we have had five mass extinctions, the last being the Cretaceous–Tertiary. If this event had not occurred, humans probably would not have developed.
