Shocked at Schools’ Demonization of Darwin, Says Prof
You will be shocked to hear that even in this day of moon exploration, nuclear reactors and robot surgery, Darwin’s theories are still being denied, distorted or disregarded in many U.S. classrooms. And not just in the deep South.
Some 20 to 40 percent of biology teachers in at least 28 states studied, including New York, are finding ways to avoid teaching evolution, according to Dr. Keith Sheppard, director of Science Education at Stony Brook University.
And the good professor ought to know: He’s in charge of certifying teachers in teacher-preparation programs in New York and Long Island. As part of our celebration of the February 1809 birthday of Charles Darwin, the British naturalist who brought evolution to the attention of the world, Dr. Sheppard is coming to the New York City Atheists’ meeting on Thursday evening to help spread the word about the resistance tactics undertaken by many teachers to avoid teaching evolution.
“Most scientifically minded people are shocked to hear the statistics on the teaching—or rather, the nonteaching—of evolution in this country,” says Dr. Sheppard, who got his doctoral degree in science education at Columbia University, where he conducted, and oversaw, scores of studies on biology teachers’ understanding of, and willingness to teach, evolution.
Dodging Darwin
What the professor found is that biology teachers will dodge the teaching of evolution in classrooms by denying its importance, distorting it by teaching creationism as well or by pushing it to the end of the curriculum in the hopes they won’t actually get to it in the school year.
“For me, evolution is a central axiom of biology,” Dr. Sheppard says “You can’t understand biology without evolution. Simple as that. But for a lot of teachers, it’s not a central axiom at all. It’s something they can cover in one day or push to the end of the year or limit to one chapter.
“This is not just a phenomenon that occurs only in the Bible Belt,” he adds. “It occurs everywhere in the U.S. There are a significant portion of biology teachers who do not believe in evolution. We’ve found surprisingly large numbers of New York teachers who tend to diminish the importance of evolution.”
Darwin as Devil
“These teachers also tend to include or incorporate creationist ideas in teaching biology. They’re anti-Darwinian. To them, Darwin is the devil. He is definitely demonized,” the professor says, punctuating his concern with massive D-for-Darwinian alliteration.
Dr. Sheppard, who is British by birth, did his undergraduate work in chemistry at the University of Liverpool. He earned the British equivalent of a Master’s degree in science education, physics and chemistry in Liverpool. He earned his doctoral degree in science education at Columbia University. He taught at the Teachers’ College of Columbia University for seven years before coming to Stony Brook three years ago.
